Health classes explained
Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard: understanding the categories and what determines your classification.
Life insurance premiums depend on rate categories. While names vary across carriers, the framework is standardized: Preferred Plus (sometimes Super Preferred or Preferred Superior), Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard, then table increases for atypical risk. Smokers face a distinct set of brackets at higher prices.
What underwriters look at
Build (height relative to weight), blood sugar and lipid profiles, family cardiac or cancer history occurring before age 60, driving history, medication use, professional and recreational pursuits, and cigarette or vaping use. Achieving the premium class requires favorable outcomes across virtually every factor; Preferred allows minor imperfections; Standard Plus and Standard accommodate managed conditions such as hypertension under control.
How to use the quote tool
The health question asks for an accurate self-assessment: Excellent aligns with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus and Average with Standard. Quotes reflect this category; actual class is confirmed through carrier underwriting. When uncertain, get quotes at two levels and evaluate both; the application ultimately determines the actual rate. Overstating health doesn't reduce final cost; it only makes initial estimates unreliable.
Susman Insurance Agency can help identify carriers with underwriting standards better suited to your health profile, frequently making a greater difference than advertised rates.
