For over a century, Chino was a center of agricultural production in Southern California, starting with ranching in the 1840s and growing into a major producer of sugar beets, walnuts, and dairy products.
Chino traces its roots to Rancho Santa Ana del Chino, a Mexican land grant established in 1841 and later developed by Richard Gird, an Arizona businessman who purchased and subdivided the property in 1887, setting aside 640 acres for a town. When Chino incorporated in 1910, the surrounding farmland was already producing sugar beets, sweet corn, walnuts, and stone fruits that were shipped throughout the Pacific coast. The town's agricultural identity was cemented early, with the walnut house becoming the second-largest in Southern California by 1933, handling 110 tons per day and employing dozens of workers.
The dairy industry became central to Chino's identity starting in the 1920s, when Los Angeles dairies began relocating to the area in search of cheaper land and a climate suited to milk production. By the 1970s and 1980s, Chino had become the highest-density dairy center in the world—a concentration of cattle ranches and milk production that earned it the name the Silicon Valley of Dairying. The scale was extraordinary: at its peak, Chino had more dairy cows per square mile than any other place on earth, supplying fresh milk to Southern California's growing population.
Agriculture shaped Chino for generations, and that heritage of land stewardship and family enterprise is part of what makes the city home today. Families who farm, work in small business, or raise children in Chino often think in decades: crop cycles, building equity, the long view.
